Bitcoin was the first in 2009, and now there are hundreds of cryptocurrencies. These new coins (that operate on their own native blockchain) are called altcoins or alternative coins. One popular altcoin is Dogecoin. It can be bought, sold and traded, just like Bitcoin. It can also be mined!
So, what is Dogecoin mining?
You’ll know what hardware and what software you need to get started. You’ll also know whether or not Dogecoin mining is for you!
So, where would you like to start? The beginning? Great choice. Let’s have a quick look at how Dogecoin got started.
A (Very) Short History of Dogecoin
In 2013, an Australian named Jackson Palmer and an American named Billy Markus became friends. They became friends because they both liked cryptocurrencies. However, they also thought the whole thing was getting too serious so they decided to create their own.
Palmer and Markus wanted their coin to be more fun and more friendly than other crypto coins. They wanted people who wouldn’t normally care about crypto to get involved.
They decided to use a popular meme as their mascot — a Shiba Inu dog.
Dogecoin was launched on December 6th, 2013. Since then it has become popular because it’s playful and good-natured. Just like its mascot!
Dogecoin has become well-known for its use in charitable acts and online tipping. In 2014, $50,000 worth of Dogecoin was donated to the Jamaican Bobsled Team so they could go to the Olympics. Dogecoin has also been used to build wells in Kenya. Isn’t that awesome!
Users of social platforms – like Reddit – can use Dogecoin to tip or reward each other for posting good content.
Dogecoin has the 27th largest market cap of any cryptocurrency.
Note: A market cap (or market capitalization) is the total value of all coins on the market.
So, Dogecoin is a popular altcoin, known for being fun, friendly and kind. It’s a coin with a dog on it! You love it already, don’t you?
Next, I want to talk about how mining works…
What is Mining?
To understand mining, you first need to understand how cryptocurrencies work. Cryptocurrencies are peer-to-peer digital currencies. This means that they allow money to be transferred from one person to another without using a bank.
Every cryptocurrency transaction is recorded on a huge digital database called a blockchain. The database is stored across thousands of computers called nodes. Nodes put together groups of new transactions and add them to the blockchain. These groups are called blocks.
Each block of transactions has to be checked by all the nodes on the network before being added to the blockchain. If nodes didn’t check transactions, people could pretend that they have more money than they really do (I know I would!).
Confirming transactions (mining) requires a lot of computer power and electricity so it’s quite expensive.
Blockchains don’t have paid employees like banks, so they offer a reward to users who confirm transactions. The reward for confirming new transactions is new cryptocurrency. The process of being rewarded with new currency for confirming transactions is what we call “mining”!
It is called mining because it’s a bit like digging for gold or diamonds. Instead of digging with a shovel for gold, you’re digging with your computer for crypto coins!
Each cryptocurrency has its own blockchain. Different ways of mining new currency are used by different coins where different rewards are offered.
So, how do you mine Dogecoin? What’s special about Dogecoin mining? Let’s see…
What is Dogecoin Mining?
Dogecoin mining is the process of being rewarded with new Dogecoin for checking transactions on the Dogecoin blockchain. Simple, right? Well no, it’s not quite that simple, nothing ever is!
Mining Dogecoin is like a lottery. To play the lottery you have to do some work. Well, actually your computer (or node) has to do some work! This work involves the confirming and checking of transactions which I talked about in the last section.
Lots of computers work on the same block of transactions at the same time but the only one can win the reward of new coins. The one that earns the new coins is the node that adds the new block of transactions to the old block of transactions. This is completed using complex mathematical equations.
The node that solves the mathematical problem first wins! It can then attach the newly confirmed block of transactions to the rest of the blockchain.
Most cryptocurrency mining happens this way. However, Dogecoin mining differs from other coins in several important areas. These areas are;
  • Algorithm: Each cryptocurrency has a set of rules for mining new currency. These rules are called a mining or hashing algorithm.
  • Block Time: This is the average length of time it takes for a new block of transactions to be checked and added to the blockchain.
  • Difficulty: This is a number that represents how hard it is to mine each new block of currency. You can use the difficulty number to work out how likely you are to win the mining lottery. Mining difficulty can go up or down depending on how many miners there are. The difficulty is also adjusted by the coin’s protocol to make sure that the block time stays the same.
  • Reward: This is the amount of new currency that is awarded to the miner of each new block.
Now, let’s compare how DogeCoin mining works compared to Litecoin and Bitcoin…
Mining Comparison
Bitcoin uses SHA-256 to guide the mining of new currency and the other two use Scrypt. This is an important difference because Scrypt mining needs a lot less power and is a lot quicker than SHA-256. This makes mining easier for miners with less powerful computers. Fans of Litecoin and Dogecoin think that they are fairer than Bitcoin because more people can mine them.
Note: In 2014, Litecoin and Dogecoin merged mining. This means they made it possible to mine both coins in the same process. Dogecoin mining is now linked with Litecoin mining. It’s like two different football teams playing home games in the same stadium!
Mining Dogecoin is a lot faster than mining Litecoin or Bitcoin. The block reward is much higher too!
Don’t get too excited though (sorry!). Dogecoin is still worth a lot less than Bitcoin and Litecoin. A reward of ten thousand Dogecoin is worth less than thirty US Dollars. A reward of 12.5 Bitcoin is currently worth 86,391.63 US Dollars!
However, it’s not as bad as it sounds. Dogecoin mining difficulty is more than one million times less than Bitcoin mining difficulty. This means you are much more likely to win the block reward when you mine Dogecoin.

How to Mine Dogecoin
There are two ways to mine Dogecoin, solo (by yourself) or in a Dogecoin mining pool.
Note: A Dogecoin pool is a group of users who share their computing power to increase the odds of winning the race to confirm transactions. When one of the nodes in a pool confirms a transaction, it divides the reward between the users of the pool equally.
Dogecoin Mining: Solo vs Pool
When you mine as a part of a Dogecoin pool, you have to pay fees. Also, when the pool mines a block you will only receive a small portion of the total reward. However, pools mine blocks much more often than solo miners. So, your chance of earning a reward (even though it is shared) is increased. This can provide you with a steady new supply of Dogecoin.
If you choose to mine solo then you risk waiting a long time to confirm a transaction because there is a lot of competition. It could be weeks or even months before you mine your first block! However, when you do win, the whole reward will be yours. You won’t have to share it or pay any fees.
As a beginner, I would recommend joining a Dogecoin pool. This way you won’t have to wait as long to mine your first block of new currency. You’ll also feel like you’re part of the community and that’s what Dogecoin is all about!
What You Need To Start Mining Dogecoin
Before you start Dogecoin mining, you’ll need a few basics. They are;
  • A PC with either Windows, OS X or Linux operating system.
  • An internet connection
  • A Shiba Inu puppy (just kidding!)
You’ll also need somewhere to keep the Dogecoin you mine. Go to Dogecoin’s homepage and download a wallet.
Note: A wallet is like an email account. It has a public address for sending/receiving Dogecoin and a private key to access them. Your private keys are like your email’s password. Private keys are very important and need to be kept completely secure.
There are two different types; a light wallet and a full wallet. To mine Dogecoin, you’ll need the full wallet. It’s called Dogecoin Core.
Now that you’ve got a wallet, you need some software and hardware.
Dogecoin Mining Hardware
You can mine Dogecoin with;
  • Your PC’s CPU: The CPU in your PC is probably powerful enough to mine Dogecoin. However, it is not recommended. Mining can cause less powerful computers to overheat which causes damage.

Whether you’re mining with an ASIC, a GPU or a CPU, you’ll need some software to go with it. You should try to use the software that works best with the hardware you’re using. Here’s a short list of the best free software for each choice of mining hardware;
  • CPU: If you just want to give mining a quick try, using your computer’s CPU will work fine. The only software I would recommend for mining using a CPU only is CPU miner which you can download for free here.
  • GPU: If you mine with a GPU there are more software options. Here are a few to check out;CudaMiner– Works best with Nvidia products.CGminer– Works with most GPU hardware.EasyMiner– User-friendly, so it’s good for beginners.

UPDATE 1/21/14: I'm not updating this guide anymore. Most of the steps should still work though. See the wiki or check the sidebar for updated instructions.
Before you do anything else, you need to get a wallet. Until there's a secure online wallet, this means you need to download the dogecoin client.
Now open the client you just downloaded. You'll be given a default address automatically, and it should connect to peers and start downloading the dogechain (aka blockchain in formal speak). You'll know because there will be a progress bar at the bottom and at the lower right there should be a signal strength icon (TODO: add screenshots).
If you've waited 2 or 3 minutes and nothing is happening, copy this:

And paste it into a new text file called dogecoin.conf, which you then place into the dogecoin app directory.
Now restart your qt client and the blockchain should start downloading in about 1-2 minutes.
Once it finished downloading, you're ready to send and receive Dogecoins!


Decide how you want to get Dogecoin. Your options are:
I'll go into detail about each of these. I'm currently writing this out. I'll make edits as I add sections. Suggestions are welcome.


Mining is how new dogecoins are created. If you're new to crypto currencies, read this. To mine (also called "digging"), a computer with a decent GPU (graphics card) is recommended. You can also mine with your CPU, but it's not as efficient.


These instructions cover only Windows for now. To mine, you'll need to figure out what GPU you have. It'll be either AMD/ATI or Nvidia. The setup for both is approximately the same.

Step One: Choose a pool

There's a list of pools on the wiki. For now it doesn't really matter which one you choose. You can easily switch later.
NOTE: You can mine in two ways. Solo mining is where you mine by yourself. When you find a block you get all the reward. Pool mining is when you team up with other miners to work on the same block together. This makes it more likely that you'll find a block, but you won't get all of it, you'll have to split it up with others according to your share of the work. Pool mining is recommended because it gives you frequent payouts, because you find more blocks. The larger the pool you join, the more frequent the payouts, but the smaller the reward you get.
Over a long period of time the difference between pool and solo mining goes away, but if you solo mine it might be months before you get any coins.

Step two: Set up pool account

The pool you chose should have a getting started page. Read it and follow the instructions. Instructions vary but the general idea is:

Step three: Download mining software

For best performance you'll need the right mining software.
Unzip the download anywhere you want.

Step four: Set up miner

Create a text file in the same folder as your miner application. Inside, put the command you'll be running (remove brackets).
For AMD it's cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://: -u -p
For Nvidia it's cudaminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://: -O :
Substitute the right stuff in for the placeholders. Then on the next line of the text file type pause. This will let you see any errors that you get. Then save the file with any name you want, as long as the file extension is .bat. For example mine_serverName.bat.

Step five: Launch your miner

Just open the .bat file and a command line window should pop up, letting you know that the miner is starting. Once it starts, it should print out your hash rate.
If you now go to the pool website, the dashboard should start showing your hashrate. At first it'll be lower than what it says in the miner, but that's because the dashboard is taking a 5 minute average. It'll catch up soon enough.
NOTE: A normal hashrate is between 50 Kh/s up to even 1 Mh/s depending on your GPU.

You're now mining Dogecoins

That's it, nothing more to it.


CPU mining isn't really recommended, because you'll be spending a lot on more on power than you'd make from mining Dogecoin. You could better spend that money on buying Dogecoin by trading. But if you have free electricity and want to try it out, check out this informative forum post.


Trading has been difficult so far, but Dogecoin just got added to a few new exchanges. If you don't have a giant mining rig, this is probably the best way to get 100k or more dogecoins at the moment. I'll write up a more complete guide, but for now check out these sites:


Faucets are sites that give out free coins. Usually a site will give out somewhere between 1 and 100 Dogecoin. Every site has its own time limits, but usually you can only receive coins once every few hours, or in some cases, days. It's a great way to get started. All you do is copy your address from the receive section of your wallet and enter it on some faucet sites. Check out /dogecoinfaucets for more. If you go to each site on there you might end up with a couple hundred Dogecoin!


This method is pretty straightforward. Post your receiving address, and ask for some coins. Such poor shibe. The only catch is, don't do it here! Please go to /dogecoinbeg.


At the moment there are two tip bots:

Open up the debug window CLI tab, type `help' and you'll see how much you can do and the information you can ascertain with the core node that you can't with electrum.
Electrum relies on the core node for all of its functionality, save their proprietary mnemonic seed backup algorithm, which is much less secure than BIP33 (which can be generated with the core; electrum literally provides you with the dictionary to carry out an attack on its addresses, and it doesn't use an EC in its cryptographic process, meaning the encryption entropy is low and the nonces are predictable).
I could order some RIPEMD-160 ASIC chips for $2/piece and have a Chinese fabricator design a PCB using some cheap 22nm SHA-256 chips and the RIPEMD chips, replace cgminer or bfgminer's computational sections with the ultra optimized vanitygen algos for brute forcing priv keys, switch out stratum for JTR-style threaded rainbow tables based on a few hundred thousand rounds of mnemonic generation using electrum's suite- along with some open source code analysis, and in a month I could create a machine that could generate and test hundreds of thousands to millions of mnemonics per second.
The only reason this hasn't been an active practice is because destroying bitcoins keypair-cryptography (or at least appearing to have done so) would send the price under a dollar in 24hours. An update would be patched within a few days and it should be a lot of hard work for nothing. But I wouldn't be surprised if this is occurring actively on a small scale, with old addresses presumed to be "lost." Even if an active address was hit, as long as it wasn't overdone, people would shrug it off as a physical compromise of their own network/machine/software, not an epidemic- but considering the frequency of exchanges getting "hacked" and the actual ease by which the attack could be carried out, I think there's an equal possibility that the security is already completely compromised.
Theoretically all mnemonic backups are inherently insecure (as is any password using dictionary words, no matter how long) but at least using ECDHE and a deterministic seed, you're actually getting a password with a strength equal to that of the sum of its characters as ASCI to BASE/56 encoded bits. Without that, you may as well have a 12 character passphrase (with the possible characters equal to the number of words in the abridged electrum dictionary.) So it's {POSSIBLE WORDS}12 for electrum vs. something closer to {(POSSIBLE WORDS60)(POSSIBLE HD-SEEDS)}256 for a BIP33 mnemonic using SecP256k ECDHE algo (assuming average number of letters in a word are 5 and HD seeds are pseudo-random.) But mnemonic seeds are still insecure even with BIP33. Use the core wallet and you get a key with true randomness using entropy from blockchain derived sources, 2 rounds of SHA-256 and a final RIPEMD-160 round with a 256-Bit secret generated in conjunction with with an extremely secure ECDHE curve=trillions upon trillions of possibilities. That not only makes a single key harder to break, it means there is a much less likely chance of someone randomly guessing secrets and testing them to see if they come out to a funded address in the whole scheme of things.
It's like if I tried to break into every Dell server. If many people were using weak passwords, and I could try a password on all of them at the same time- I'd surely crack a bunch, and make Dell look bad as a company, even though the servers were inherently fine. Keeping the network strong means making sure you do your part to save face, after all bitcoin is owned and CONTROLLED by the userbase.
As a side note, RIPEMD was only used in the public scheme along with SHA256 (despite being significantly weaker) because at the time SHA256 was the only widely implemented and highly secure algorithm- meaning it could be as widely adopted and widely mined as possible. So SHA-256 was the logical choice for the main block algorithm. There wasn't another option for the wallet address' scheme that would be secure tunneling enough and still computationally feasible and easy to integrate. So SHA-256 was most secure, but without the round of RIPEMD-160 as the deterministic round, wallets could be brute forced at the same time as mining, with the same hardware.
For the most secure, fool-proof, uncrackable wallet, here's what I do/used to do: Use the Core node to bake Segwit P2SH addresses. I don't use HD wallets period, but HD is secure enough as long as you're using a truly random secret. Remember that the secret in a BIP33 HD wallet is the master privkey, additionally, each address has it's own xpriv, which, considering the combinations possible, saving the individual xprivs makes the most sense anyway. If you plan on spending the coins soon, just secure the wallet .dat file with a strong 16+ character (A-Z,a-z,()$&@#$/?¿%÷,0-9) passphrase (this is just the wallet file pw it has nothing to do with your addresses) then just throw the wallet on a flash drive or better yet an SD card or 2 and call it a day.
For addresses you plan to put on ice for a while, concat your coins into a handful of accounts, don't store more than $1,000/address. Then using the `dumpprivkey' Core CLI command (I think that's the command, it's something like that, type help and you'll see it if I'm wrong), a text encrypting program (for good measure) and a barcode/QR code generator (all offline!), get the private keys for each address, encrypt the text with an easy to remember password (you'll be taking the keys offline, and storing physically, so no need to worry too much about that pass, it's better to just keep them physically safe), and then generate QR codes for each. Paste them all into a word doc with the corresponding (lightly) encrypted numbers you generated the QRs with. Print out a couple copies and then delete the addresses from the wallet.
Put those paper wallets somewhere safe. You could also split the key down the middle and store the 2 parts of the paper wallets in different places instead of encrypting the plaintext xprivs. So you'd need to scan both paper keys and paste the solutions together to access the coins.
That's all a bit extreme... in reality, unless you're super paranoid and storing millions, you'll be fine by keeping your coins in the core node with decent firewall and a good .dat passphrase.

[Update]: Fug, I was hacked.

The result of my malware scan, in particular the lines below, was very interesting. Obviously I can't tell if MalwareBytes is correct in flagging these. Some of them indicated "PUP.BitcoinMiner" which seems valid but others were marked as "Trojan.BitMiner.TS" or "PUP.Proxy.BCM" ... those may very well be valid downloads but I do know that MalwareBytes did not indicate ALL of the Bitcoin miners I had downloaded...

There are massive things missing. One there is no hash function in python that is going to get you the biblehash.

Ill fix the pool software if its not working properly, as it has historically worked with over 98% uptime and I kept it maintained, and after 1/2 day of being behind you are talking about porting it to NOMP. Shameful.

I've found a bitcoin miner installed on my PC and can't get rid of it.

So, long story short - my computer started heating out of blue even on idle. Eventually I've noticed that one of my rainmeter windows shows this:
Google showed nothing about the file itself, manual search found 2 igfxupdate.exe's in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\update. Both showed that they belong to intel and so on (properties -> details), except one was 260 KB and the other 400 KB. If you start the 260kb one, you get nothing, however 400kb shows this:

cgminer and poclbm both relate to bitcoin mining and I have never had anything to do with it.

And here's my problem - when you start any process explorer (task manager, etc.), the process stops and restarts once you close it. 2 antivirus programs show nothing. You can delete the files, but they reappear after a restart. How can I get rid of it?

Can I use an old GPU (nVidia 9800GT) for mining?

I've been mining the last few days using CPU. I'm getting around 25-30Khs. (linux VM on 2017 Macbook Pro, limited to 3-4 cores) According to the bitcoin calculation charts, my old 9800 should be able to top that. (But thats using SHA256.) I tried ccminer, and cgminer, but no success so far. (Not finding CUDA or OpenCL compatible hardware.) . I'm just not sure if i'm missing something, or theres another miner i can use or not. (The 9800 is in a Windows machine.)
I have a feeling i'm out of luck, but I figured I'd ask.

mining with ATI Radeon HD 5700 series

I have been getting into the bitcoin frenzy finally and started looking into ways in which I can start out. I'm not the usual n00b since I have everything up and working. Only thing that I am having problems with are the performance issues. I have my Catalyst drivers installed and running and the Radeon is working like it should but at a lower speed than I expected from what I have read about others using this same card series. When I use guiminer with the slush pool, I get at least 80 kH/s, when mining litecoin with guiminer scrypt, I get more performance at 200 kH/s. both less than what I had expected. This is all in windows. When I give it a go in Linux with cgminer, the program doesn't even see the card, apparently it seems to be checking the usb hub instead of rhe PCI and PCI express ports. Is there a way to make cgminer look into the pci slots instead of only checking the usb ports. I can always use a USB asic miner from a company like butterfly labs but I have heard not only negative feedback about not only the performance but also the price in which they are sold for and how it's time consuming to get it to pay you back the extremely large amount of money that you spent on them in the first place. Can I get my Radeon card to mine faster in windows, and how can I get it recognized in Linux by cgminer. This is getting really frustrating, and bitcoin jobs are more competitive than actual jobs. If it's relavent, I only get internet bandwith at 2Mb/s which i think is a major contributing factor but I've been told it isn't.

Guide For New Shibes

So it has become apparent to me from the constant questions on this subreddit that a lot of new miners/shibes need help, so I have decided to make a basic guide to most of the questions I see a lot here.
1) BTC - This means Bitcoin so If you see a miner that says BTC it does not work with dogecoin because dogecoin is Scrypt.
2) Scrypt - This is what dogecoin runs off of, or what your computeasic/gpu solves to support the network.
3) Asic - This stands for an application-specific integrated circuit, or in less confusing terms a miner dedicated completely to mining a particular type of coin such as dogecoin.
4) GPU Mining - Using a graphics card to mine crypto currencies.
5) CPU Mining - A slow and inefficient way of using your computers Central Processing Unit to mine crypto currencies.
6) Hash Rate - The rate at which you mine a crypto currency. The higher the better.
7) KH - This Means Kilo Hashes. 1KH = 1,000 Hashes a Second
8) MH - This Means Mega Hash - 1 MH = 1,000,000 hashes a second.
9) Should I buy an asic? - If you want to support the network yes. If you want to solely make money off of it No. Buy the coin if you want to make profit. This is my opinion, there is no one answer to this question.
10) Mining Pool - Pooled mining is a mining approach where multiple generating clients contribute to the generation of a block, and then split the block reward according the contributed processing power. Pooled mining effectively reduces the granularity of the block generation reward, spreading it out smoothly over time.
Tl/DR You Work with other miners to solve stuff faster making you money faster.
11) Mining Difficulty - How hard it is to solve the problems to generate dogecoin.
12) Do I need a fan? - Yes I cannot stress how important it is to properly cool your units. Make sure your units are always cool or else they might melt. Do not think you are safe just because you turn your ac up, but a fan.
13) What Mining Pool Should I Pick? - Here is a list of all of the pools Pick one that works for you.
14) What is a wallet? - This is where you store your dogecoin and where you can send and receive dogecoin.
15) What Wallet Should I get? - Online is convenient but not safe. Paper Is the Safest But Not convenient. Cold Storage is the mostly safe and somewhat convenient.
16) What is cold storage? - Basically putting your wallet on an offline device like a usb.
17) Can I mine on a mac? - Yes look here for more info.
18) Cloud Mining - A service you buy that mines for you. you pay for a certain amount of hashes, lets just say 10gh for an example, and the company/service mines you this amount for the time you bought. It is not profitable usually.
19) What Is a Raspberry Pi? - A small cheap computer that people use to run their miners on.
20) Watts - The measure of electricity.
21) Should I pre-order? No Never F%&$ing pre order, you will get scammed 99.9999% of the time.
22) Can I still mine? - Yes, you probably wont make money but you will support the doge community.
23) Linux - An operating system like windows that people use to run mining programs on.
24) If you Have an animal make sure to properly protect your mining rig from them. Wires from the machines make great chew toys.
25) How Do I calculate if im going to make money with my mining rig? - Use This mining Calculator This is also a very good calculator

How To Mine Doge with Ubuntu 13.10. (Part 1, for AMD Graphics Cards)

I feel the community really needs a resource like this. Because if I had a Doge for every-time taught a newbie how to Mine on Ubuntu, I would be a very rich doge!
EDIT: Sorry if it looks funny, Reddit doesn't like the numbers I put in for some reason.
If you have Ubuntu you have likely not upgraded because you think you cant mine on 13.10, and while that has been true in the past, a few people have got it figured out. So feel free to upgrade. If you are not on Ubuntu, Seriously you should consider using it. Even if its just on an older desktop.
Alright, so lets get a few things clear, I am assuming that you just FRESHLY installed Ubuntu 13.10 x64 on your system. I am assuming that you have no drivers, and no miners. You will need at least a key board and a mouse. The guide will be done in several parts, this first part is for most AMD Graphics cards. If you have an Nvidia, or just want to mine with your CPU, please check back later for those guides!
When reading this guide, please remember that as I give you commands to type into the terminal, Anything between { and} must be included. Do not copy and paste the {}.
Lets get started, If you have not already done so, Install Ubuntu 13.10 64Bit From Here (
*1. Lets start by making sure you are up to date. Open up the terminal and enter this:
{sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade} 
Let that run for a bit.
*2. Once that has finished we are going to download some applications we will need:
{sudo apt-get install dh-make dh-modaliases execstack libxrandr2 libice6 libsm6 libfontconfig1 libxi6 libxcursor1 libgl1-mesa-glx libxinerama1 libqtgui4} 
*3. Once that has run its course we are going to install the ssh server. Remember this command is going to make your computer shut down. While it is shut down, carefully install your graphics cards. If you don't have any experience with this, I suggest you 3 minutes to watch this guide, because failure to install a graphics card the right way can destroy it.
{sudo apt-get install openssh-server sudo shutdown now} 
*4.Install your Card(s) and turn the computer back on.
*5. Make a new folder called "AMD DRIVERS123" inside of your download folder. Downoad the following 3 things into that folder. (1. AMD Drivers: (2. AMD APP SDK: (3. AMD ADL SDK:
*6. Ok, now we need to unzip and compile those drivers. So, open a terminal my right clicking inside of "AMD DRIVERS123". The enter this:
{unzip amd-catalyst*.zip chmod +x amd-catalyst*.run} {sudo ./amd-catalyst*.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/saucy} 
*7. Now we need to install the drivers. Enter the code exactly as you see it, don't worry, the first command will fail, we are expecting it too.
{sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb} {sudo apt-get -f install} {sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb} {sudo reboot} 
Your computer should now reboot.
(If this failed, you probibly need to remove the old drivers. Do this
{cd /etc/default sudo pico grub} 
Change the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" 
Now save by pressing [CTRL+x]
{sudo update-grub} this will make the change perminent. {sudo reboot -n} Reboot with new settings. Once it starts back up try installing the new drivers again.) 
*8.GREAT! You are really on a roll! Now we need to update AtiConfig
{sudo aticonfig --initial --adapter=all} 
*9.Time to install the APP ADK:
{tar xvf AMD-APP-SDK*.tgz} {sudo ./} {sudo reboot} 
*10. WOOT! You are so close to diggin that sweet Doge!! Its time to download CGMiner. IMPORTANT NOTE! You need to get CGminer 3.7, IT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL WORK. Do not get any older or newer, Just this. :
{sudo apt-get install git unzip git clone -b 3.7} 
*11. Ok, now go back to "AMD DRIVERS123", Unzip AMD SDL SDK 6.0. Once you have it unzipped, go the file called "include", open it up, copy everything inside, then go find CGminer. Copy these files into the CGminer file called ADL_SDK.
*12. To install CGminer, we are going to need a few things. Get all of these.
{sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf libtool libcurl4-openssl-dev libncurses5-dev pkg-config libudev-dev} 
*13. Lets go ahead and compile CGminer.
{cd cgminer} {./} 
*14. Ok, when you did that, it told you GPU was not supported, time to fix it.
{./configure --enable-opencl --enable-scrypt} 
(if you did it right you should now get this: OpenCL...............: FOUND. GPU mining support enabled scrypt...............: Enabled ADL..................: SDK found, GPU monitoring support enabled)
*15. If everything has been good so far then
*16. MATHEMATICAL! Now lets get it set up to run a test.
{nano} {!/bin/bash export DISPLAY=:0 export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100 export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1} {./cgminer -n} 
*17. Now save by hitting [Control+x][y][Enter]
*18.Lastly lets CHmod
(If your output looks like this your ready to go!!! CL Platform 0 vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. CL Platform 0 name: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing CL Platform 0 version: OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1214.3) Platform 0 devices: 1 0 Tahiti GPU 0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series hardware monitoring enabled 1 GPU devices max detected)
*20. Excellent! Now we have it installed, its time to pick 2-3 pools, and get accounts set up at each of them. I currently use These 2, and If I find another I like I'll update. If you have a really awesome pool you would like me to include on the list, feel free to message me.
Pools: (great community, server not super stable, but they have a chat. I hang out here a lot under the handle 'StrongBad' feel free to stop buy and ask questions) (Super stable pool, Great contests, super friendly, and they pay your miner a bonus if you find the block!)
Choose your pools, go to their sites and sign up. VERY IMPORTANT!!! Use different usernames and passwords for every mining site. If one site gets hacked, you don't want to give them a way to steal everything!!!!! Don't worry about the worker names and passwords being unique or complex tho, the most they can do with this is mine for you.
*21. Ok, now go to the CGminer folder, and open up a Terminal Window.
{sudo ./cgminer} 
This should start ./cgminer up with some really basic settings, and not pointed at any pool. Lets fix that: First press [p] to go to pool settings Now [A] and enter the information for the 1st pool. For instance if you are signing on for dogehouse: (Input server details: stratum+tcp:// Username: 'yourusername.workername password: 'yourpassword') If you got no errors, you did it right! Your miner should now connect and start to mine very slowly.
Now, do the same thing for all your other pools. the reason we do this is because Doge Coin pools are constantly being DDoS attacked, and this way your worker automatically switches over to a good pool if one go's down.
*22. time to save your current settings press [Enter] to get back out to the main menu, then [s] to bring up settings. Now press [W] to write a Config file. Name it DogeCoin.conf, and make sure to save it in the location it directs you too.
*23.OK! So, now we have everything set up to its basics. What you need to do now is sit down, and fine tune your Card(s). Its really early in the morning, and I need to get some sleep, I will add more on how to tune your card tomorrow in another post, and link it HERE:

Just the weirdest, most inexplicable sht I've ever dealt with in a rig. [PC, blackscreening, semi-random]

Hi all.
I'm utterly, utterly baffled. Stumped. Bemused. Befuddled. Bamboozled. I cannot explain this. At all.
I crash on my desktop, often (but not always) while opening Chrome. Crash can be 1m after boot, or 4 hours after boot. Machine blackscreens, stops responding, doesn't send anything to the monitor or respond to scroll lock or capslock.
Fairly standard - but I do NOT crash if there's a game running. Literally can run GW2 for as long as I need to, or warframe, or Titanfall, and it's solid as a rock.
I've arranged an RMA for my GPU as it's the most recent addition to the sytem (25 Feb 2014) and it was blackscreening on wake (but with a responsive PC/keyboard and the media server was still up), but I'm stumped. I've never seen anything like this.
What causes a rig to blackscreen when browsing or opening explorer, but doesn't have ANY problems when it's running high end games at max rez?
2500k @ 4.5GHz
R9 290 4GB Factory OC
700W Seasoninc PSU
1 SSD (OS + Games)
2 HDD (Stuff)
Midrange Gigabyte mobo, nothign special

EDIT: Memtest results are in. No problems found. Ran for 8 hours, zero errors.
Ran MS Defender, no viruses found.
Instaleld Avast, turned off MS Defender, full scan, no viruses found.
Files Detected: 11 D:\Media\Downloads\cgminer-3.8.5-windows.7z (PUP.Optional.Cgminer) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Wonder if I have (or hopefully had) a malware issue. GW2 is running in the background and it's still not crashed...
Ideas anyone? Am thinking about ordering a new CPU/Mobo and seeing if that fixes it - next on the list (after another crash) is going to be a W8 re-install.
OS re-installed and BIOS updated, still crashes. Definitely hardware. Definitely not RAM, definitely not storage (SSD or HDD). Crashes still independent of load - but most common when clicking on something (Firefox, Chrome or Evernote for example).
So the candicate list as far as I can work out is:
CPU (moderately likely, though stressing with linpack or OCCT or prime does not cause crashes, and it's happy while playing GW2) mobo (happy while gaming, unhappy when asked to execute a crappy little prgraom like Chrome. Weird? gotta be unlikely) PSU - Feeling like this is a likely candidate. GPU - but doesn't crash when rendering ~100 players at max res in GW2.
Soooooo.... can anyone think of a thing to test next?
Final edit: running on the onboard GPU on mah telly. Flawless, no crashes at all. I think it's the GPU, the 2D processing chip or whatever must've been borked.
Recap: new GPU, no crashes. All is now good!

Help with a rig

i am running a 5x7950 rig on windows 8. all 5 of my cards mine fine on bitcoin but when I run --scrypt it crashes on cgminer it just says the program stopped responding. However when I do sha256 through bitcoin it seems to work fine.
I am running with 2GiG of memory on the motherboard. Is it possible that I require more memory on the motherboard for scrypt mining?

Thanks to everyone who helped, I finally got it up and running. it was a driver issue. It seems like 13.1 whql works better. However the trouble in installing 13.1 was kind of sketchy. I had all 5 cards in there, and installed 13.1 the first time. and the screen went blank for hours. So i just ended up doing a hard boot on the system. It turns out it stalled in the installation, so but driver was already installed, so I just manually updated the driver in device manager (at that time only 1 was displaying, while the others were running on windows drivers, so i updated the rest to the amd drivers). At this point in time all was well. However when I ran cgminer, it said opencl.dll was not present. I didn't think too much of it.
Today I retried 13.1. When the screen went blank this time, I did another hardboot, then same thing happened, this time however, I didn't manually update the other 4 card's drivers. Instead I reran the install, without uninstalling, because I figured it was a FRESH INSTALL that was not finished, if i was to reinstall and if it did finish installing I'd have a proper opencl. And that WAS the case. I did scrypt mining benchmark on cgminer, and it was running at very low kh/s like 15kh/card. But it was working. Then i figured it was probably because the configuration was off. So off I went and started playing with the conf file and now, every card is hashing at 500kh/s. I even got it up to 600kh/s but my power bar tripped. I'm going to perhaps upgrade my circuit next week and try for 6 cards at 600kh/s. I have no doubt i can get it over 630-650 as I have tried those setting. below is a picture of hashing at my lower spectrum, i'm doing a burn in test.
then here are pictures of my rig. not very clean right now, I'll fix it up for you all when I complete the RACK. I have 3 more of these boards on the way So still work to be done.
If you are all wondering how the rack was made. It's pretty simple, these racks are 99bucks at canadian tire (i live in canada), but you can get them at costco. There are like 4 shelves, each shelf can fit 2 systems.
The steel frames were added on for the cards. As you can see i misjudged the height of the riser, so I had to actually use spacers and wood blocks to get the board higher. I am planning to move the shelves higher as they are adjustable, but it requires me to remove the system since i'll be putting a mallet to it.

Software Review: CGWatcher by Justin Malone

I've been using it for over a month and let me tell ya about it: CGWatcher.
So basically, you can run CGMiner and sometimes it'll crash. Sometimes if a GPU card gets above 100 C, it will not only blue-screen my machine (spontaneous shut-down), it will actually lose the 2nd GPU (something 'snaps' with the drivers). In the past 24 hours, I have reinstalled windows about 8 times or so.
Tools like CGWatcher have become essential. Another reason would be that if overheat is detected in CGMiner, it will shut down the GPU, then re-enable it after the target temperature is reached (on my machine 75 or 85 C), but wait!!! Did I say that CGMiner would re-enable the GPU? Because in reality, it only says it re-enabled the GPU, and it will just sit there at 0.0 hash rate. Until you restart it.
Tools like CGWatcher therefore have become essential to litecoin and bitcoin miners.
Earlier versions of CGWatcher didn't switch back and forth from litecoin to bitcoin mining easily. I do not think this was a software issue, I believe that you have to use CGMiner to output your Config File, then choose that in CGWatcher. If you try to add scrypt mining from inside CGWatcher, it didn't seem to work well.
Whatever it was, now it is no longer a problem (again, if it ever was) to switch from litecoin to bitcoin mining.
The developer has made a lot of look and feel improvements, and as we speak it actually seems to be adjusting difficulty automatically (although I didn't configure it, I'm sure it's in a config page somewhere and isn't entirely unwelcome just yet -- it's just a surprise).
I left anonymous feedback to the guy to OPEN SOURCE IT. DAMMIT. This is 2013, and things should be open-sourced, so that other developers can make their improvements. However, this is a free country, and I am using it, and it seems to be working great. Though y'all might like to give it a whirl yourselves.

Bitcoin mining OK, Litecoin not so much... System Freeze's

I'm not sure how much detail to include here, so here goes:
GPU: Dual 7970
Drivers: 13.1 & 2.8 APP SDK
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
I pull 1.3 Mhz easily. No OC. I'm not at home right now, so I can't pull my cgminer options (thread concurrency, shaders, etc) but I took them directly from the mining comparison website.
My temps stay around 68-72 C I use powered risers.
Problem: After starting mining I can run for 1 - 4 hours before my system will freeze. It's an incremental freeze, within a few seconds the main window locks up, seconds later I cannot change windows, then the mouse will lock up.
Then that's it. No crash, no BSOD. It just hangs. I watched my pool's site to see if it was just brain dead but still running, no dice my hash rate drops to zero.
The only way out is a hard reboot (power button).
When I mine bitcoin I don't have this experience. I understand, oranges and apples. After some digging I'm leaning on this being a mem timing issue.
Does anyone have this experience?

Cgminer isn't mining

Hey guys,
I just extracted cgminer and got it to connect to slushpool but it seems like its not mining at all. I'm using my gtx 970 until my ASIC device arrives.
Windows 10, intel i 7 4790k, nividia gtx 970, bitcoin Armory.

Somebody pls god help me get my block erupter usb stick working

running windows 7 trying to use cgminer the following are a working string for my old GPU and the new .bat file i created to work with my block erupter that is NOT working

please help me. every second not mining is hurting my heart.

Trying to find config files and seeds for mined Bitcoin in 2013

Hi all! In December of 2013 I decided to use my new desktop to mine some bitcoin just to see what it was all about. After about 4 days I decided it wasn't worth my time and just forgot about it. I was looking back through my hard drive and found that I had downloaded the following files: bitcoin-0.8.6-win32 . zip cgminer-3.8.3-x86_64-built.tar . bz2 cgminer-3.8.3-windows . zip easyminer . exe guiminer-20121203 . exe armory_0.90-beta_winAll . exe I pretty much completely forget how much I mined or where I might have stored the seeds but I hoping that one of y'all know a bit more about these programs and where the default storage spots might be and if there will be any useful info there. Any help is appreciated!

Block erupter issue

I have looked over google for some help but im obviously not looking in the correct places because I did not see what i need. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. Here is whats going on. I started off with 1 asic block erupter (ASICMiner Block Erupter USB 330MH/s Sapphire Miner) and everything was going fine. i added another one to the setup and everything was still going fine. (this is all being done on USB ports that are on the back of my PC, no USB hub, yet) I then aquired an antminer (BITMAIN ANTMINER U2 2Gh/s USB Bitcoin ASIC Miner. Overclockable) and plugged it into my PC as well. I am using BFGminer 3.10.0 currently and everything was running fine. all 3 miners were mining. I went ahead and ordered a usb hub because i figured if i was going to keep adding miners that my computer would not be a good place to put them all. well a day before the hub got here, i noticed that one of the miners (the saphire one) was not mining. i looked at my device manager and only saw 2 of them. so i rebooted, messed around with some different ports but nothing made that one work. i figured it was broken for whatever reason and assumed it was because it wasnt suppose to be on my mother board. thing is, it works on another PC. so i waited for the hub to come in to see if it would work on there but it still does not. Im thinking its a driver issue since its not showing up on this computer but it will on another. Any idea or suggestion on how to get my current PC (windows 8.0) to run it? Should i try a different version of bfgminer, or maybe cgminer? im fairly new to all this so i dont really know where to go with it.

Can't get bfgminer to work..

Hi, i'm new to bitcoin mining, but i have done research already. Yet i don't seem to get any miner (bfgmineguiminecgminer) working..
Signed up in a pool, added workers in bfgminer (url, username, password) but nothing happens. Also in the Manage devices section there is nothing to see.
