Laura Shin (Forbes) on the upcoming bitcoin hard fork

The current bitcoin drama will likely impact the rest of the crypto space, and I think this article does a great job outlining the upcoming hard fork. Plus, there's a nice shoutout to Ethereum in the article.

The most influential women in crypto

On International Women's Day, we’d like to give recognition to the incredible women who have made undeniable contributions to the crypto industry, crypto mass adoption, promotion, and development.
Laura Shin - the chief editor for cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies at Forbes, one of the founders of Forbes Fintech 50. She is also a host of Unchained, a podcast about cryptocurrencies and blockchain.
Nina Nichols - the founder and president of Global Women in Blockchain.
Elizabeth Stark - the co-founder and CEO of Lightning Labs, the company whose main product, Bitcoin Lightning Network, helps crypto users to use payment channels with skyrocketing speed and low fees.
Galia Benartzi - the co-founder of a cryptocurrency exchange Bancor which allows users to exchange crypto without any mediators, on the basis of smart contracts.
Rachel Wolfson - the cryptocurrency and blockchain journalist. Also, she is a host of the well-known “BadCrypto” podcast. She has been motivating lots of women to become a part of the crypto and blockchain sphere.
Tiffany Hayden - the crypto influencer with 76k followers on Twitter, huge XRP (and crypto in general) fan and supporter. Also, she helps professionals and organizations in the finance industry understand blockchain technology in an easy and comprehensive way.
Jennifer Greyson - CEO of AI Blockchain, which uses AI to make financial forecasts using blockchain technology.
Connie Gallippi - the founder of BitGive, a Bitcoin charity organization that empowers donors and organizations to make a positive social impact by bitcoin donations. BitGive is a partner of many charity organizations such as The Water Project, Save the Children, Medic Mobile, and many others.
Joyce Kim - the executive director of Stellar Lumens, one of those cryptocurrencies that are popular to use both within blockchain-focused communities and traditional businesses. Stellar provides the advanced speed of transactions, is customizable and highly accessible. Kim also works as a lawyer for immigrants as well as domestic abuse survivors.
Jinglan Wang - the executive director of the Blockchain Educational Network that helps students all over the world to create and develop their blockchain communities.
Jill Ni - Head of Binance Charity, Binance Charity is a non-profit blockchain-based organization that helps solve social and ecological problems using blockchain technology thus making donating more transparent, secure. Recently, the company has made significant donations to combat coronavirus in China.
Maggie Xu - CEO of Jaxx Liberty, a cryptocurrency platform that empowers people to take control of their digital lives by managing digital assets, including stable coins. All Jaxx products (wallet, in-app exchange, portfolio, markets, news and block explorers) are non-custodial, always free and offer 7-day support to its global user community.
Despite the fact that the number of women in crypto and fintech industries is still lower than that of men, more and more of them are getting involved in the industry and start playing significant roles in blockchain space from one year to another. This tendency wouldn’t come true if there weren’t women who inspire and be role models for other women. We hope that this trend will continue and, in the next decade, we’ll see more women in crypto!

Reminder: Blockstream CEO admitted Bitcoin's absurdly high fee was part of the plan so Blockstream could profit, "side chains won't really solve scaling".

Admitted by Blockstream CEO, Adam Back.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurashin/2017/10/23/will-this-battle-for-the-soul-of-bitcoin-destroy-it/
Blockstream plans to sell side chains to enterprises, charging a fixed monthly fee, taking transactions fees and even selling hardware - a fact that has caused the big blockers to protest that Blockstream and the engineers it employs who are also Bitcoin core developers want to keep the block size small so Blockstream can profit.
Here is the good part:
Back says this isn't true because, beyond a certain point, side chains won't really solve scaling.
These Blockstream fucks don't even believe LN will scale, they're just hiring PR sweatshops to shove bullshit down people's throat to buy time for their "Liquid" side chain service.

The State of Cryptocurrency Media, According to Laura Shin

In the latest episode of “Balancing the Ledger,” the _Fortune_team turns the tables on Laura Shin, known in the cryptocurrency world for her own probing podcast interviews, for a critical discussion about media coverage of the crypto industry.
One problem, Shin highlighted, is that cryptocurrency-focused media outlets are more prone to “pay to play” schemes, which involve journalists providing positive coverage in exchange for money or gifts. One reason for this, Shin speculates, is the global nature of the blockchain industry, and that many of the writers covering it hail from places where the norms around journalism are different than in the West. (Editor’s note: _Fortune_does not engage in such tactics.)
Shin, who was previously a staff writer for Forbes, notes that it’s not just far-flung crypto outlets that have shown questionable ethics. Mainstream outlets, too, she says, have been irresponsible in feeding the frenzy during cryptocurrency’s bubble phases.
“I just thought, ‘Oh my god, their audience is going to lose so much money. Why are they doing this?'” Shin says.
As for her own fledgling media empire—Shin now runs two podcasts, “Unchained” and “Unconfirmed,” and is building out a live-events business—she has encountered the same challenges as the rest of the media industry, including fears of the monopoly power of the big tech giants.
“What if someday there is the Google of podcast ads, and suddenly they tweak something and my revenue plummets?” Shin says.
Meanwhile, the cryptocurrency industry itself may soon come to provide a new revenue stream for media outlets in the form of crypto micropayments, which would allow entrepreneurs like Shin to collect small contributions from thousands of readers or listeners. Shin worries, however, that such a system could come to resemble Spotify—where a handful of popular artists cash in but the majority only receive scraps. She also noted that her experience putting a “tip jar” on her blog hasn’t been a rousing success—”I’ve made like 42 cents from the tip jar,” she laughs.
While Shin has now done hundreds of interviews in the crypto world, one guest was her all-time favorite: Binance’s CEO, Changpeng Zhao, better known as CZ.
“It was the pleasure of giving somebody a tough question and having them coming right back at you with the strength of their convictions,” Shin says, describing CZ’s defense of his company’s regulatory arbitrage strategy as “interesting and thought-provoking.”
As for the issue of regulation in the United States—namely whether the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is stifling innovation in the crypto sector—Shin says she is torn.
“As an American, I’m like, ‘Hey, wait, these teams are actually American, they should be here [but] there’s all this talent leaving…but I’ve also had friends lose money to scammers,” she says. A major court ruling or act of Congress would bring much-needed clarity to the industry, she adds.
For now, Shin remains hard at work on her forthcoming book, which she describes as “the second chapter of crypto history—picking up the story of cryptocurrency following the early days of Bitcoin as chronicled in Nathaniel Popper’s highly regarded Digital Gold.

The https://www.digi-id.io website and release went off with a boom! The developer bounty to have digi id integrated into the mobile wallets is complete. Devina.es a spanish news website is adopting digi-id and a plugin for WHMCS, https://whmcsnow.com/digi-id-addon.html as well as implementing it for others and their customers is out! The open-source plugin is available here: https://github.com/evilmouse69/Digi-ID-for-WHMCS/.
“DigiID is to also be FIDO compliant and bind to the TLS layer so it doesn’t need to be a zero sum game like these people seem to be advocating.” This would allow Digi-ID to compete against facebook to login to different websites as an authentication method.
Here is an excellent animated video for an overall overview of the Digital ID technology - https://youtu.be/pLrQycud5GI

Digibyte has the ability for smart contract support. I bring this up as it has been a question asked before. This smart contract support is based on the same language as Bitcoin Script. There currently are no good docs or examples which is something a few of the core devs are going to be working on next once the mobile wallets are shipped. Inventor of the ICO unveils “The Perfect Token Sale” - UpToken: An Ethereum ATM on every corner

In 2010, bitcoins were worth 25 cents. I told everyone I knew that Bitcoin was going to be huge.
In 2012, I published a paper about how to raise funds to build a protocol layer on top of Bitcoin, an idea which later became known as the “Initial Coin Offering.” After 1.5 years, still no one had taken the action to develop the idea. To show that it could be done, I launched Mastercoin (now Omni), in 2013. Today, the Omni platform hosts assets worth half a billion dollars, including MaidSafe and Tether. Only Ethereum assets are worth more.
In 2014, I predicted other things like the hacks on overly complicated Ethereum contracts losing millions of dollars.
These predictions were largely ignored.
Now it’s 2017. For years I have been waiting for “the perfect token sale”, and I finally found it. It may sound bonkers, but I predict crypto ATMs are going to be a really big deal in the coming years, and I helped design a token, UpToken, which captures that opportunity. I’ve partnered with a crypto ATM company that I think is best positioned to make a big move in this space (Coinme), and helped them design a token for ATMs called UpToken (uptoken.org). The proceeds from the token sale will be used to deploy crypto ATMs all over the world. We want “a crypto ATM on every corner.”
Here’s why I think UpToken represents “The Perfect Token Sale”
Can you see why I am so excited about this? I am posting about UpToken today in various places, even though history suggests only a few visionary people will listen. But, if you are among them, you can learn more and sign up for the token sale at uptoken.org.
You can read more about me and see videos about my “crazy” predictions on my LinkedIn profile.
edit: Laura Shin has a nice article about this on the Forbes website: https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurashin/2017/09/21/heres-the-man-who-created-icos-and-this-is-the-new-token-hes-backing/#1d9622421183
TL;DR: I predicted Bitcoin would be big in 2010, invented the “ICO” in 2012 and tried to get someone to do the first one, but no one did. So I did. Now I have a new prediction: “UpToken is the perfect token sale.”

Top Five Cryptocurrency News Stories of the Weekend in Five Sentences or Less (10/15/2018)

Around the Block is a daily crypto news update sent directly to your phone. We breakdown the top five stories in five sentences or less. No BS. No Bias. https://aroundtheblock.news/ ____________________________________________
1) Nouriel Roubini and Vitalik face-off: debate coming soon?
Following Roubini’s accusations and Twitter tirade against Vitalik Buterin, he posted that he would be “happy to have a live debate the Ethereum founder,” on the condition that they both agree on a moderator who should not be a “biased shill,” and specifically not Forbes contributor Laura Shin. Buterin responded, nominating Kevin Pham: “Can’t get more fair than someone equally 100% biased against both of us!”
2) Tether trouble: millions of USDT exit Bitfinex, stablecoin falls below $0.90
Bitfinex had a rough week: a pseudonymous author claimed they were “insolvent,” millions of tethers (USDT) were seen exiting Bitfinex, fiat deposits and withdrawals were frozen, and the trade value of USDT fell below 90 cents. The value of USDT has been stabilizing since and the exchange has released a blog post denying the insolvency rumours claimed in a Medium post that has since been taken down.
“Bitfinex is not insolvent, and a constant stream of Medium articles claiming otherwise is not going to change this,” they wrote. As for the fiat freeze, they said there are still complications but they are doing their best to minimize waiting times.
3) SEC comes after another ICO, which falsely claimed it had SEC approval
In a release, the SEC said it “has obtained an emergency court order halting a planned initial coin offering,” as well as any ongoing pre-ICO sales by a company called Blockvest, which created the token BLV. According to the release, the company falsely claimed to be approved by the SEC.
“Blockvest and Ringgold, who also goes by the name Rasool Abdul Rahim El, were using the SEC seal without permission, a violation of federal law, and falsely claiming their crypto fund was ‘licensed and regulated.’ The complaint also alleges Ringgold promoted the ICO with a fake agency he created called the ‘Blockchain Exchange Commission,’ using a graphic similar to the SEC’s seal and the same address as SEC headquarters.”
4) LTC founder Charlie Lee interested in Monero, may “eventually have to step away from Litecoin”
In an interview with cryptocurrency prime dealer SFOX, Litecoin founder Charlie Lee said: “Bitcoin is obviously the soundest form of money around, and Litecoin, I would say, is the second soundest. Another project that I’m interested in as Monero: I think a bit of privacy and fungibility is something that’s missing from Bitcoin and Litecoin, and it’s very much needed.”
“Obviously, Litecoin is more centralized than Bitcoin. If anyone wants to target Litecoin, they could attack me. That’s something that definitely could be improved. So I think that moving forward, I’ll eventually have to step away from Litecoin”.
5) Confirmed: Coinbase’s crypto index fund is closing down
A Coinbase spokesperson has reportedly confirmed that the cryptocurrency exchange is shutting down the Coinbase Index Fund by the end of October, four months since it went live, according to a CoinDesk article.
“After assessing demand from retail, accredited and institutional investors, Coinbase has decided to shut down Coinbase Index Fund. We will focus on providing diversified exposure to all investors through Coinbase Bundle,” the spokesperson said

What the Fork?

What's going on? Why is Bitcoin forking ad infinitum? Soft forks,
